JOURNEY TO
LISBON

“Journey to Lisbon” is a theatre performance that seeks to investigate, through a fictional story, the
artists´ families´ past and their connections to Portugal´s recent history, based on an original text by
Isabela Figueiredo in dialogue with the album “Diz À Mãe Que Está Tudo Bem” by the musician Silk
Nobre.

In this performance-concert, just as in the work by Isabela Figueiredo and Silk Nobre, the family
appears as a nuclear context from which to approach sociopolitical tensions, such as colonialism,
racism and the experiences of the “retornados” (settler returnees to Portugal, from the African
colonies, after the 1975 revolution).
The arrival in Lisbon of an older generation, to visit their children, is the departure point for
developing the script along two fundamental discursive lines: family history and generational
conflicts; investigating family dynamics, the silence, the difficulties in communicating and the
passage of time.

O Clube O Clube is an artistic theatrical structure, formed by Joana Cotrim and Rita Morais. It was born of a
meeting between 3 artists in 2018, Joana Cotrim, Rita Morais and Ana Sampaio e Maia, following
their artistic learning experience, acquired in the collectives SillySeason and Pato Bravo, and is a
result of their desire to continue this collective work. O Clube is born out of the desire to develop a
constant dialogue between artists, in an attempt to deepen knowledge through a cohesive
collaboration of exchange and sharing, which can be achieved through both regular support from
production, as well as an attentive artistic eye and constant questioning, dialogue and critique. We
see in this encounter the possibility to continue to grow as artists, a gamble of conviction in
contributing to the national artistic panorama, which implies an articulate reflection, but also of
being ripped apart through artistic desires and wishes; through a responsible engagement with
society.
We intend to give continuity to the work each of the artists involved have been developing, in order
to perfect their research through their performative experiences. Together, we intend to take risks
with artistic forms, assimilating the novelty of error in building and learning. We consider this type
of error to be indispensable for our renewal and for fostering thought and reflection through
building artistic and theatrical projects that put into practice topics that are a cross-section of
society and are urgent to us.
O Clube emerges then, as a structure which is anchored in an idea of
artistic renewal and revitalization, strengthened by the confluence of the different paths taken by
its founders.
